Georgia: The Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia, Tengiz Nasaridze, together with the Mayor of Dmanisi Koba Muradashvili, attended the event held in the celebration of the International Day of Combating Desertification in the municipality of Dmanisi.
The International Day for the Fight against Desertification and Drought was established in 1994 by the United Nations initiative and is celebrated every year on June 17. This year’s message of International Day is: “Union around the earth, our heritage, our future.”
It is worth noting that, in the framework of the project “Achieving the national goals of the neutral balance of land degradation through restoration and sustainable management of degraded pastures,” a demonstration plot of controlled pastures was made in the village of Renewal of Dmanisi. The 40 hectares of modern-standard pasture not only serve the local community but also promote both soil health and livestock productivity, offering a promising future for the area.
“Such initiatives are significant in order not only here but also in other areas, where agriculture is traditionally an important destination for the population, grazing pastures should be acquired by modern methods and sustainable pastures management, which will preserve the country’s pastures as a resource and will be a very important step for the development of agriculture,” – noted Tengiz Nasaridze.
The Mayor of Dmanisi, Koba Muradashvili, thanked the project initiators and implementers for their work and discussed the importance of pasture for the villagers.
During the event, the members of the grazing users union were given animal care and milk storage equipment.
The project is being implemented on the initiative of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture and funded by the Global Environment Fund (GEF), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Caucasus Regional Centre for Environment (REC Caucasus).
