Within the framework of the information-educational event dedicated to the International Day of Environment – “Protecting Groundwater Resources – Knowledge, Practice, Future” was held in Georgia. The students and academic staff of the Faculty of Mining-Geological and Mountain Sustainable Development of STU attended a field-practical lecture in Tianeti municipality.

The Faculty of Mining, Geology and Sustainable Mountain Development (GTU) of Georgia shared the glimpses of the event on its official Facebook Page on June 8, 2026, Monday. A small note about the meeting, along with its glimpses.

The field lecture was held in cooperation with the National Environment Agency, where the Head of the Geology Department, Merab Gafrindashvili, and the staff of the Agency introduced the equipment of automatic underground freshwater monitoring stations, physical-chemical and quantitative monitoring parameters of water, a remote data management system, software, the possibilities of Pi, and the working principles of field-portable hydrogeological equipment.

Also, the geological-hydrogeological conditions of the survey area, the characteristics of groundwater formation, and the expansion of flood horizons were discussed.

Students, with the help of agency specialists, performed measurements of water characteristic parameters and learned procedures for field records production. By them, the materials collected in the field will be processed in the university’s study laboratory and prepared for student presentations about the practical knowledge gained.

The National Agency for the Environment is one of the most important employers of the graduates of the Applied Geology curriculum. Consequently, joint measures will contribute significantly to the preparation of qualified personnel to meet the demands of the labor market.

It is also noteworthy that raising specialists in the field of hydrogeology in Georgia has historically and even today been based only on the Technical University of Georgia. Considering the interest and wishes expressed by the students, it has been decided that similar activities should be planned to be conducted twice a year.
