Telavi, Georgia: The Minister of Culture Tinatin Rukhadze inspected the rehabilitation works of Batoni Prison Door Church in Telavi. The rehabilitation works, supported by the Ministry of Culture of Georgia, are carried out by the National Agency for Protection of Cultural Heritage.
The Ministry of Culture of Georgia shared the glimpses of the inspection on its official Facebook Page on March 6, 2026, Friday. The Georgian Ministry also shared a small note about the rehabilitation works along with its glimpses.
The arrangement, re-arrangement and fragment repair of the cramite cladding; the restoration and plastering of the facades and interior of the cathedral; partial removal of the concrete and brick trapeze stone in the sanctuary with the solution of kiri. Also, made south and west doors, wooden shingles.
Preservation of the southern minashen and retaining wall of the church is currently underway. Final stage will be rebuilt flooring, west door knobs, east facade mirror cap, south and west doors and timber shingles.
Works started in November 2025 and will be completed this year. “King Erekle has the greatest place in the history of our country. Telavi is the most important place in terms of our spirituality, identity or tourism.
Together with the local self-government and the church, we are actively working to rehabilitate the complex at a high level and to promote this historical monument,” – said Tinatin Rukhadze.
Together with the minister, rehabilitation works were inspected: Metropolitan David of Abba Alaverde (Makharadze), Deputy State Commissioner in Kakheti Givi Metreveli, Deputy Mayor of Telavi Municipality Giga Mamukelashvili and Director of National Agency for Protection of Cultural Heritage Tea.
The minister also visited the Telavi Historical Museum in the territory of Batoni Prison and checked the exhibition presented there.
