Irakli Kobakhidze, the Prime Minister of Georgia underscored the importance of the tourism and aviation sectors for the development of Georgia’s economy. He also said the government is determined to boost the tourism and aviation sectors to create better job opportunities in the country.
The Prime Minister made this comment today when he presented the country’s development in his annual report to the Parliament. He also informed the parliament that in the first quarter of the current year the country earned a total revenue of $808 million from the tourism sector alone. This is a 40 percent increase from the pre-pandeminc revenue from the sector.
According to PM 1.3 million international traveler , including 929,000 tourists, visited the country in the first quarter breaking all previous records. Government will do its best to maintain the current trend as well. At the same time during his address the Prime Minister said that 13,600 flights would be carried out in the summer season to improve the travel experience of international tourists.
It is worth noting that currently 50 airlines operate in the country whereas before 2012 there were 23 airlines. Moreover nine airlines have entered the Georgian market last year. Out of the total airlines 11 airlines have access to 38 destinations.
It is worth noting that more than 1400,000 passengers travel using these airlines which are continuously operating in the country. According to the prime minister Georgia’s capital city of Tbilisi will also have a new airport expansion plan which will serve approximately 18 million passengers. The present airport’s capacity enhancement was necessary due to the high inflow of domestic and international tourists.
During his address to the Georgian parliament the PM also highlighted new projects that will make the Georgian tourism industry more stable. This also includes support for Telavi and Mestia airports in the country’s east and northwest. The country has attracted a significant number of international tourists who want to visit the Caucasus region.
