As world is facing challenges to tackle the issue of global warming and climate change Tbilisi State University has hosted a seminar on science and sustainable development. The role of the educational institution in this direction was discussed during this event.
Professor Nino Okribelashvili Head of the Standing Committee on Strategic Development opened the meeting where the experts shared their views and opinions.
UN Resident Coordinator, Dr Sabin Mahl and Head of the University Horizon Europe Office, Dr. Nino Farsadanishvili talked about the UN Sustainable Development Goals and their integration into the university space.
They while talking on the science and technology effect on sustainable development said that “the role of the educational institution is very crucial to overcome the challenges being posed by climate change and global warming”.
They also stated that the educational institution can teach the students about the strategies for environmental conservation. The youth of all the country has a great role to play against the burning issue of the world.
The concept of sustainable development has gained momentum in the last two to three decades when global warming began to throw serious challenges to human existence. Sustainable development means the wise use of natural sources. Natural sources must not be wasted or used unnecessarily beyond a certain limit.
Moreover the main objective of sustainable development is to ensure that the activities carried out by human living do not estimate the capacity of ecosystems. The key speaker also added that to achieve a sustainable future new sources of energy, materials as well and infrastructure are required.
The innovative ways of the science and technology will be required to:
- Pollution reduction
- Reduction of energy consumption
- Reduce waste production
- Enhancing the capacity of recycling
- Incresing the forest growth and reforestation
In the last the experts called for untied efforts to face the challenges jointly to tackle global issues like climate change, etc.
