Georgia: Police in Batumi have apprehended two juveniles for shoplifting at a grocery store. The case has been taken under investigation by the police in the city.
The police, two juniors have entered the retail shop located at Batumi. When they entered it, they snatched all the goods for sale and ran away from the crime scene. It was the retail shop’s owner who realized of the theft, after the said event.
The case was promptly taken over by officers from the Batumi City Administration of the Adjara Police Department (Ministry of Internal Affairs). Thanks to a variety of operational-search measures, they were able to establish the identity of the suspects.
The two teens were placed under arrest and are now officially charged with the crimes. The items stolen were recovered by law enforcement and stored as evidence.
The reporters saw video shot from the store’s cameras. The police say the video is evidence that the defendants committed a crime. Video from similar devices are often important in such cases, because they can show what happened in the crime in detail, as well as those involved.
Maybe not. Police are also looking into a handful of old theft cases in the Batumi region. Authorities are also looking into whether those teens were also linked to those incidents. A final ruling has not been made yet, but officials say more may come to light as they continue to investigate.
This incident is covered under points 2 and 3 of the Article 177 of the Criminal Code of Georgia. This article refers to theft and the penalty for this article can reach up to seven years of jail.
And a quick reminder only two teens are charged so far. Neither has been found guilty, and we must assume they are innocent until the court proves guilty. Also, these two teens are minors so there could be some specific legal steps to protect their rights.
These events are much more significant in terms of why youth commit crime. The services in certain countries see that teenage offenders could be less likely to commit crime if they have early preventative measures, the quality of family life and are attending positive leisure activities. One mistake could influence any teenager’s life so this is why preventative measures are so important.
According to police, at least for the moment, the investigation is ongoing. The accused will stand trial and the court will make the final decision after considering all the evidence.
Here’s another tip for shop owners: a security camera that actually works is a good idea. In this case, the footage provided the investigators a way to confirm that the scene occurred, and move things along.
We are still in investigation mode and, perhaps we will learn more as the police look into the other reported thefts.
