Georgia: The US State Department promises that Georgia has remained a strong security partner of the US and has persisted in its unrelenting counterterrorism operations.
The United States State Department has released the report on terrorism for 2023. In the annual report, Georgia’s measures to fight terrorism are evaluated along with those of other countries around the world.
The document highlights that Georgia has continued its unwavering efforts in counterterrorism and remained a firm partner of the United States in security.
The report states that the situation related to terrorism in Georgia was calm and stable and no terrorist incidents were reported. The document states that in 2023 no Georgian citizen has been identified for terrorist activities in Syria or Iraq.
The State Security Service of Georgia is generally well-equipped and trained and its counter-terrorist division continues to receive regular training and equipment from international partners and carries out internal exercises.
According to the report, the criminal law of Georgia properly enforces acts of terrorism and supports terrorism, including financing terrorism, cyberterrorism, training, publicly calling for terrorism, transferring members to a terrorist organization, as well as criminalization of foreign terrorist fighters.
According to the U.S. State Department, the country has continued its work to improve land, air border and maritime security through participation in international drills and U.S. training. The report highlights that the development of the integrated border management strategy and action plan for 2023-27 has been completed.
The document highlights that Georgia has joined the UN anti-terrorist migration program, which aims to prevent, identify and investigate terrorist crimes and related transfers using passenger pre-data and passenger name-recording system data.
According to the report, in 2023 Georgia continued its efforts to combat violent extremism, including focusing on minority integration, education, media access, youth and cultural diversity.
Finally, as the US State Department notes, Georgia is actively involved in counter-terrorist issues in the direction of international, regional and bilateral cooperation. The country cooperates closely with NATO, the UN, the Council of Europe, the European Union, EUTO, Interpol and other organizations. The country is a member of the Global Coalition to Fight Daesh and participates in meetings of various working groups of the coalition.
