On July 16, at night, in the north of Greece, the Ukrainian plane An-12, which was flying from Serbia to Jordan and which was loaded with ammunition, crashed.
It is reported by “European Truth” with reference to the Greek TV channel ERT that the disaster happened at 23:00 local time.
A few minutes earlier, the Civil Aviation Authority of Greece received a report of a problem with one of the plane’s engines. The plane requested permission for an emergency landing.
An-12 was offered to land in Thessaloniki or Kavali. The crew of the plane chose Cavali, after which contact with them was lost. It crashed 40 kilometres west of the airport.
The investigation is underway; the so-called black boxes will be opened.
According to ERT, there were 8 to 10 people on board. They were carrying “dangerous cargo”, most likely shells.
A fire broke out at the accident site. However, the fires are small, and there is no risk of re-ignition.
According to its website, the plane belonged to Meridian, which operates charter cargo flights around the world and contracts with government and non-governmental organizations to transport humanitarian supplies. In addition, it closely cooperates with the UN and NATO on the delivery of urgent, including military and dual-purpose cargoes.
