Working meeting held to tackle plastic pollution in Black Sea Ecosystem

As the plastic pollution problem seems to be growing with every passing year a working meetingĀ  has been held to curb the problem in Black Sea ecosystem. Ā The meeting witnessed the participation of both representatives of both governmental and non-governmental sectors.

As the plastic pollution problem seems to be growing with every passing year a working meetingĀ  has been held to curb the problem in Black Sea ecosystem. Ā The meeting witnessed the participation of both representatives of both governmental and non-governmental sectors.

The attendees of this working meeting Ā discussed Ā in detail the technologies for collecting plastic waste found in rivers and the Black Sea. They also stressed to implement the immediate measures for the identification of the Ā plastic-contaminated hotspots and improving plastic waste management policies throughout the various region of country as well.

This working meeting was also held under the World Bank’s PROBLUE initiative. The initiative was launched to support integrated, sustainable, and healthy development of marine and coastal resources.

On this occasion, the government official who addressed the participants included Solomon Pavliashvili, Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture. He spoke specifically about the need for a unified policy for the preservation of biodiversity for the countries and agencies and civil organizations of the Black Sea basin so that the problem can be protected with the collective efforts of all the stakeholders.

The minister Solomon Pavliashvili Ā while underlining the problems said that “Plastic pollution of water bodies like seas ,ocean ,rivers etc has become the global challenge in recent years. There is urgent need toĀ  studry the causes behnd the incresinng pollution along with the measures that can be introduced to mitigate the problem also.ā€

According to minister ā€œwe need to keep in mind that the isolated cleaning drive will only serve the short term objectiveĀ  but this issue require theĀ  wide scale approach. Georgia needs to lead theĀ  drive for tackling theĀ  problemĀ  with the collaboration of the countries of the region.”

It is worth to mention that in recent time the government has already implemented Ā national plastic waste preventation program in year 2021 and is member of the high-ambition coalition formed with objective to reduce the plastic pollution by 2040.

Klaus Sattler, an environmental specialist of the World Bank, commended the proactive steps taken by the Georgian government in the direction of pollution control. These efforts are crucial in eliminating the dangers of plastic pollution and serve as an inspiration for other regions.
