Georgia: The “Youth for a Secure Future” meeting was held on October 4 to celebrate the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, observed every year on October 13. Participants discussed dangers related to climate change and presented initiatives.

Nils Christensen, Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Georgia, and Ekaterine Bendeliani, Deputy Director of the Environmental Information and Education Center, opened the meeting.

“Through education programs, scholarships and school grants, we encourage young people to deepen their knowledge of climate change and engage in environmental activities. It is important that the younger generation is prepared to make decisions related to climate change, said Ekaterine Bendeliani, Deputy Director of the Center for Environmental Information and Education.

The short documentary “Thank You for This World” premiered at the event. Climate Ambassador Rezi Dgebuadze is starring in the film. “Thank You for this Universe is a project that tells us how young people think about climate change and how they see their futures in a changing reality.

Young people are at the epicentre of climate change-related activities. Their involvement and participation are critical to building a disaster-safe, safe, sustainable future. The UN Development Programme is proud to support youth initiatives that are changing societal attitudes and promoting sustainable ways of life, said Neil Christensen, Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Georgia.

The ‘Youth for a Secure Future’ meeting resulted from the collaborative efforts of the Center for Environmental Information and Education of the Georgian Ministry of Environment and Agriculture, the UNDP, the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Embassy of Sweden, and the Swiss Development Agency. This global collaboration underscores the unity and shared responsibility in addressing climate change and disaster risk reduction.
