Tbilisi:  Zviad Bobokashvili, the head of the Scientific Research Centre of Agriculture research department of Georgia attended an international conference. As the conference was conducted online, Zviad Bobokashvili also addressed participants through video conference.

The main topic of the conference was “Ensuring sustainable agriculture by adopting measures to mitigate the negative effects of global climate change and adaptation.”

The other key speakers of the event include L. Ujmajuridze, Z. Bobokashvili, N. Shengelia, and L. Tsigriashvili. The scientific conference also discussed specific topics such as “Georgian hazelnut production in the face of climate change—expected impacts and mitigation approaches.” The conference aroused great interest among the listeners.

It is worth noting that more than 200 scientists and researchers from 30 countries presented their reports at the relevant sessions of the conference. There was a detailed discussion on improving global climate change prediction models, modern possibilities of using robotics in fruit growing, improving resource-saving irrigation technologies and new selection methodologies for obtaining adaptive varieties.

Almost all the participants raised the main concern of how to prevent crop damage caused by climate change and growing global warming. Some experts call for streamlining global action to tackle this global problem.

The other also suggested that this is not only the responsibility of an individual country but of all the countries of the world. Moreover they stressed the need for a greater role for international organisations as well.

Climate change has changed the weather pattern and reduced agriculture production. At the same time many countries are facing a decline in the production of food crops, which are essential to ensure a country’s food security.

According to experts if immediate decisions are not taken, there will be a worldwide hunger problem, which will make a large population vulnerable to hunger.

The scientific conference concluded with a panel discussion, where the audience and key stakeholders, actively participated in discussing the practical application of specific proposed scientific measures to mitigate global climate change.
