Portugal Defense Minister Helena Carreiras visits Georgia for first time

Tbilisi: For the first time in the history of independent Georgia, the Minister of Defense of Portugal, Helena Carreiras, visited Georgia on an official visit. The Minister of Defense of Georgia, Juansher Burchuladze, hosted his Portuguese counterpart in the country. After the official welcoming ceremony between the defense officials, a bilateral meeting was held at the Ministry of Defense.

The Minister of Defense of Georgia, Juansher Burchuladze, hosted his Portuguese counterpart in the country. After the official welcoming ceremony between the defense officials, a bilateral meeting was held at the Ministry of Defense. 

The colleagues discussed international security issues and current challenges to security and stability. The discussions were about the prospects of future bilateral cooperation and issues of Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

The Georgian Defense Minister, Juansher Burchuladze, thanked Helena Carreiras from Portugal for her extending strong support towards Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as for her support on the way to integration into the EU and NATO. 

The meeting emphasized the joint contribution of Georgian and Portuguese military servicemen in securing international security.

The parties agreed on developing bilateral cooperation. During the meeting, Defense Ministers signed a document on cooperation between the Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Portugal and the Ministry of Defense of Georgia.

Helena Carreiras was also at the Heroes Square and crowned the memorial of heroes who sacrificed their lives in the battles for upholding the territorial integrity of Georgia. 

During the visit, Helena Carreiras also met with the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili and reaffirmed the cooperation and bilateral relations between the nations.

In addition to this, Helena Carreiras also visited the occupation line and the David Agmashenebeli National Defense Academy in Gori. Carreiras interacted with the defense officials as well as the junkers and inspired them to serve their nation well.
