Thea Tsulukiani honours memory of legendary soprano, Medea Amiranashvili

The Georgian Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Thea Tsulukiani, paid tribute to the legendary soprano Medea Amiranashvili at the civil funeral held at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theater.

The Georgian Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Thea Tsulukiani, paid tribute to the legendary soprano Medea Amiranashvili at the civil funeral held at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theater. 

She expressed her condolences to the family and relatives of Medea Amiranashvili, a recognized opera singer, who died at 93 on December 3, 2023 (Sunday).

Medea Amiranashvili was born on September 10, 1930. She graduated from Vano Sarajishvili State Conservatory of Tbilisi. Her debut was made on the stage of Zakaria Paliashvili’s Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theater in 1954 (Margarita, Guno’s “Faust”).

The singer performed the following main parts of the soprano: 

  • Maro
  • Eteri
  • Marichi (Paliashvili’s “Daisy”, “Absalom and Eteri”)
  • Lela (Laghidze’s “Lela”)
  • Tatiana (Tchaikovsky’s “Evgeny Onegin”)
  • Zemfira (Rakhmaninov’s “Aleko”)
  • Butterfly
  • Mimi (Puchini’s “Chio-Chio-San”, “Bohemia”)
  • Leonora
  • Violeta
  • Desdemona (Verdi’s “Troubadour”, “Traviata” “Othello”)
  • Elsa (Wagner’s “Lohengrin”)

He voiced the main characters in the movies: “Abesalom and Ether”, “Daisy”, and “Christina”.

A wide vocal-artistic range and a fierce inner expression characterized Medea Amiranashvili. It has been produced with great success in several countries, including Poland, Germany, Hungary, Bulgaria, France, New Zealand, Canada, and Australian opera houses and concert halls.

The legendary soprano was a teacher of the Tbilisi State Conservatory named after Vano Sarajishvili, professor; since 1991 – artistic director of the Kutaisi Opera House; People’s Artist; Laureate of the Zakaria Paliashvili Award; Knight of the King Tamar and the Order of Honor.

Medea Amiranashvili was an unrivalled performer of Georgian and European opera and a dedicated champion of Georgian music. This earned her great love and respect among opera fans and artists.

Medea Amiranashvili was buried beside her mother in the Pantheon of Didube writers and public activists.

The Georgian Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth honours Medea Amiranashvili’s memory and his contribution to Georgian culture and sends condolences to the actor’s family, friends and society.
