The general public discussion was held recently in the Rustavi on “Family Values and Protection of Minors” law. A large gathering of people was there to listen to the views of experts on the proposed law. This meeting was also addressed by many government representatives including the chairman of the Georgian parliament Shalva Papuashvili.
Notbaly few months ago government urged the parliament factions, and political groups to select one representative to be nominated for the commission. The commission was established to review the constitutional amendment against “LGBT propaganda.”
As per the constitutional provisions of the Georgian law when any new amendment needs to be introduced or when an ordinary law takes the form of constitutional law then there is a requirement of public discussion. The public discussion aims to make the public apprise on all the aspects of the proposed amendment and its repercussions on the other laws rules and regulations as well.
The Speaker of the Parliament on this occasion stated that this government is committed to taking all necessary steps for the welfare of the general public. It is to be added further that during the public discussion if the majority supports the amendment then the parliamentary procedure can proceed.
The steering committee is currently reviewing the amendment and is expected to conclude the work on May 17 . The steering committee will forward the public opinion and grievances to the Georgian parliament to take further action.
It is to be noted that as per the provisons of the constitution, the protection of the children’s rights and family values has been assured. This protection of the rights and values of the family and minors also have been an integral part of the Constitution of Georgia.”
The current draft of Georgia, titled “On Family Values and Protection of Minors,” has been introduced to address various issues concerning marriage, adoption and foster care of minors, medical intervention to change a person’s sex, as well as the indication of gender in the documents and sharing of the information as well. The key speakers also listened to the views of the attendees and gave them an adequate response as well.
