Tbilisi: One of the major airlines of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) “AIR China” is planning to expand its network to Georgia. The Georgian Civil Aviation Agency revealed this information.
As per the information of the GCAA the largest Chinese airline “AIR CHINA” is interested in conducting direct passenger flights between Georgia and the People’s Republic of China. According to the Agency, AIR CHINA is considering the implementation of flights between Tbilisi and Urumqi with a frequency of 3 times a week from September of this year. Moreover the consultations with the airline to start flights are in active mode.
It is worth noting that the abolition of the visa regime between Georgia and China have given an additional impetus to negotiations to deepen cooperation in the civil aviation sector. This also includes the proposal to increase the frequency of existing flights.
At present “China Southern Airlines” operates regular passenger flights between Georgia and China. Since last year the Airline has gradually increased the frequency of operations and currently operates daily flights on the Urumqi—Tbilisi—Urumqi routes.
It is worth noting that according to the data for the first six months of 2024 “China Southern Airlines” carried 19,991 passengers between Georgia and China. Similarly last year, the number of visitors from China to Georgia amounted to 48,304. This was a 554.5% increase compared to 2022.
Moreover according to the data for the first quarter of 2024, 32853 visits were made from China, an increase of 159.5% compared to 2023. Meanwhile the civil aviation sector expressed hopes that the new airline’s entry will contribute to the growth of passenger flow between the two countries and the deepening of trade and economic relations.
