Tbilisi: Vasil Gedevanishvili, the head of the National Environmental Agency of Georgia met with Daniel Tobler of the international consulting Swiss company GEOTEST AG with regard to conducting the in-depth assessment of glacial threat in Georgia.
GEOTEST AG is one of the leading companies with experience in assessing geographical threats and issuing preventive recommendations in almost all countries of the world, including Europe, South and North America, Asia, and the South Caucasus.
GEOTEST AG has completed the initial stage of the studies outlined in the agreement with the National Environmental Agency. This marks a significant milestone in our collaborative efforts. This will also help identify hotspots and areas containing specific risks and, subsequently set priorities according to the mentioned risk level in order to plan preventive measures in the risk zones.
While speaking on the development Vasil Gedevanishvili head of the National Environment Agency, added “The Swiss company carries out the assessment of the dangers on our glaciers and has completed the first stage of the works.
The results were discussed with our specialists. Shortly all the dangers on our glaciers will be identified in more detail and depth. I want to mention here that along with full monitoring of the glaciers, we must study the Shove tragedy, which cost many lives last year.”
It is to be added that the National Environment Agency signed an agreement with the company GEOTEST AG. The agreement has been signed for glacial (dangers arising from the glacier) assessment. This will be carried out in 22 glacial valleys across the country, and based on remote sensing technology (the latest technology, which involves the analysis of satellite material) the threat caused by ground movement will be assessed.
He also added “We put a lot of effort into preparing a complete scientifically based conclusion. That is why we involved Swiss experts in the process. Based on the modern technologies introduced in the world all processes will be identified and calculated which is the basis of the agency’s conclusion.
On the other hand the company’s expert Daniel Tobler said “Our main goal is to reduce the real risk as well as to know the critical areas and then move on to monitoring these hotspots to prevent the further threat these areas may face in the future.”
