The Public Defender of Georgia, Levan Loselian, visited the Pénitentiary institution in Rustvai on October 31. He interacted with staff members and received information about the infrastructure and services being provided for prison reforms.

It is worth noting that during his visit, he not only interacted with the staff of this penitentiary house but also with the convicts who were undergoing life imprisonment.

Notably, the public defender was interested in the results and effects of the two-year program of preparation for the release of persons sentenced to life imprisonment. A certain number of convicts who have been deprived of their freedom for life have already passed the program.

According to media reports the Public Defender will continue to actively monitor the protection of the rights of the accused/convicted. The public defender used to visit such institutions to take stock of the ground-level situation.

On this occasion the public defender also shared his view about his future plans for office. According to him the officials of Defender House will take care to uplift the level of facilities being provided for prison reform.

Prison reforms are the office’s main priority. Every year, a number of initiatives are taken. Moreover, efforts in this direction will continue in the future as well so that a maximum number of convicts can return to mainstream life, said the public defender.
