Yerevan: Levan Ioseliani, Georgia’s public defender attended an international conference in Armenia’s capital. The conference was held on the theme of “Human Rights Protection Institutions (NHRIs) role in Unstable Periods: Resilience and Challenges.”
The President and Prime Minister of Armenia were also present on this occasion. Representatives of international non-governmental organizations, human rights protection institutions and equality bodies of the Council of Europe countries also attended and shared views at the event.
It is noteworthy that the key speakers of this international conference emphasized the positive role of NHRIs in promoting effective protection and promotion of human rights and freedoms, especially in building a society based on the principles of equality.
They also discussed issues such as opportunities for cooperation and support and the importance of sharing best practices in crisis situations. They talked about the importance of ensuring institutional independence and impartiality for smooth working as well.
At the same time, the other topics which find mention in the conference include the influence of institutions/NHRIs on the human rights protection system, issues of cooperation with human rights organizations to raise civil awareness about human rights, Implementation of international standards and sharing of best practices for effective implementation of recommendations.
Moreover, the key speakers also expressed their intention to protect the rights of various vulnerable groups and to establish mechanisms for urgent and immediate response to their needs.
They expressed hopes that in the future, there will be a need to build an inclusive society and strengthen equality bodies for the protection of the rights of all.
The Council of Europe supported the conference dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Ombudsman Institute of the Republic of Armenia.
The Public defender of Georgia shared his views with the attendees. He explained different measures being taken to bring transparency to the office’s functioning and described how the office is playing an active role in protecting human rights across the country.
