Otar Shamugia met with Asian Development Bank Deputy Director General Shouhong Yang

Baku. Azerbaijan: The Minister of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia Otar Shamugia met Shouhong Yang, Deputy Director General of the Asian Development Bank (COP 29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The minister focused on the importance of the drainage system development project in western Georgia. According to his statement, it is important to regulate drainage system management at the legislative level and implement necessary infrastructure projects. Drainage soil provides the opportunity to generate additional agricultural benefits, which will contribute to improving the economic conditions of farmers in Western Georgia.

As Shouhong Yang stated, cooperation with Georgia has been fruitful for many years. Progress is being made in different sectors, it is important to strengthen Georgia’s agriculture sector, which is based on sustainable development, resilience to climate change, and effective use of natural resources.

The meeting also focused on another important component of cooperation with the Asian Development Bank – the modernization of irrigation systems in agricultural Georgia. It was noted that climate change poses significant challenges, especially in managing water resources.

“In response to these challenges, we have launched a Climate-Smart Irrigation Sector Development Program (2023-2028) that aims to increase the sustainability and productivity of our agriculture sector.

This ambitious program focuses on modernizing irrigation systems in Lower Samgori, which encompasses more than 7300 hectares of agricultural land.By replacing outdated open canals with modern irrigation systems, we will not only improve water use efficiency but also ensure better access to water for farmers,Otar Shamugia said.

Meeting with the Deputy Director General of the Asian Development Bank, Minister of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia, First Deputy Minister Nino Tandilashvili, and Ambassador Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the Republic of Azerbaijan Zurab Pataradze attended.
