Georgia: To let people know what is included in the proposed changes to the “Police” law, the Ministry of Internal Affairs released information to the public.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs informs the public through its official facebook channel via its recent post. The aim was to make people clear about the law.
In their post it was mentioned that police are composed of many units, including military forces, they serve a variety of purposes, necessitating the need for distinct recruitment guidelines and requirements in each unit.
The Ministry further clarified that individuals with military titles serve in police units with various working modes. Additionally, there will be no rivalry for military service.
However, it should be noted that from January 1, 2025, the military service will exist only in the Ministry of Defense of Georgia, therefore, from January 1, 2025, the Ministry of Internal Affairs will not be appointed with military titles, which will make the military units switch to police rules and be subjected to police competition.
Accordingly, the planned changes to the Police Law provided for modifications to certain rules for the recruitment of police and to establish a different recruitment rule for positions related to the military regime.
Recruitment/appointment in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, of course, takes into account the meeting of the established criteria.
“Specifically, a Georgian citizen from the age of 18 years, who speaks the state language, meets the requirements stipulated by the law of Georgia, and can perform the assigned functions according to his personal and professional qualities, education, health condition, and physical training,” the post said.
The ministry’s post also mentioned, “All of these circumstances will be tested in the recruitment process. A candidate who does not meet the educational, physical training, or health requirements for the position will not be hired.”
Georgian Internal Affairs Ministry further explained that the mentioned change does not apply to patrol police department employees, investigators, law enforcement officers, and administrative staff.
