The Center of Innovation and High Technologies of the National Academy of Sciences of Georgia held a regular session on Wednesday, where the report “Prospects of Commercialization of Agrobiological Science” was presented by Academician Tinatin Sadunishvili and Academy Member-Correspondent Alexander Mahanadze.
The report focused on the potential of agrobiological science and technology to develop new genetically engineered crop varieties to resist pests, diseases, herbicides, and environmental stressors, such as drought, salinity, and humidity.
The report highlighted the importance of biotechnology as a separate field that emerged from the breakthroughs of the 20th century in molecular biology and employed various techniques to manipulate living organisms for commercial purposes.
Biotechnology employs various techniques, including using and manipulating living organisms to produce commercial products, m. Sh. , cell and tissue culture, recombinant DNA technology and synthetic biology.
Modern biotechnology is a priority of the national economy of many developed countries, and increasing the competitiveness of biotechnology products in key markets is the main direction of their strategy, emphasizing that the low commercialization of the results of scientific studies is a real problem in the way to transform Georgia’s agricultural products into a net exporter A level.
The report also emphasized the need to overcome the low commercialization of scientific research in Georgia, which hinders the transformation of the country’s agricultural sector into a net exporter.
The report suggested that the commercialization of research can bring considerable profits to the researchers and increase the level of innovation in the country. The report recommended that special government programs be implemented to accelerate the development of new directions in biotechnology.
The head of the Center of Innovations and High Technologies, Academician Giorgi Kvesitadze, chaired the meeting.
