One of prominent public association of Georgia, the Movement for Cultural Heritage launched “I planted a tree” campaign.
The main goal of this campaign is to encourage the active involvement of the local population, especially the students and young people in the remedial works.
The remedial work will repair the environmental damage caused by the “Aremji” company’s mining activities over the years in regions. On the occasion of International Tree Planting Day on October 22, the organization and its environmental department held a tree-planting event at the waste rock dump of the fifth area of the Sakdrisi field.
Within the scope of the event 300 trees of different varieties were planted in the area where large-scale reclamation works were carried out before this movement also. Vegetation restoration works in such a damaged area are being done for the first time in Georgia.
Moreover these works are being executed under the framework of the “Strict Environmental Responsibility” law. Students and teachers of secondary schools of Kazreti township and Dmanisi municipality took part in the event.
Representatives of the Youth Council of Dmanisi City Hall and employees of Aremji company were also present. The participants of the event on the ground had the opportunity to receive comprehensive information from specialists on the existing challenges in environmental protection and ways to eliminate them.
The tree-planting process in the waste rock dump of the fifth area of the Sakdrisi mine will also continue in November. The project will last two years, during which time 2,500 trees will be planted to make the country more greener and climate friendly.
The “I planted a tree” campaign will start again in the spring and will be on a larger scale. The Movement for Cultural Heritage (Sakdris Committee), which has been protecting the mining production area and its surrounding cultural heritage monuments since 2014, has been monitoring the environmental obligations of the “Aremji” company since 2018.
The participants of the tree-planting event expressed their gratitude for such a wonderful initiative. They also said that this is a very important step for the conservation of the country’s flora and fauna.
