A new regional office of the National Environment Agency was opened in Batumi, Georgia. The opening event was attended by Otar Shamugia, the minister of environment protection and agriculture and the head of the Adjara government.
During the ceremony the minister and head of Adjara also familiarized themselves with the office’s workings. The new regional office will have the department of fisheries, aquaculture and water biodiversity, the Batumi Laboratory of the Environmental Pollution Monitoring Department, and the Adjara Regional Hydrometeorological Observatory as well.
In his address Otar Shamugia said, “Finally we have completed the construction of the new regional office in Batumi. It will be equipped with modern equipment for the execution of the research in the field of soil, air, and water quality.”
At the same time Tornike Rizhvadze extended his best wishes to the National Environment Agency employees on the opening of the new office and emphasized that research work will be carried out according to international standards.
On the other hand the chairman of the Environment Protection and Natural Resources Committee of the Parliament Maya Bitadze highlighted that the office was built with state investment and the environment and technological opportunities provided by this new office are a prerequisite for attracting new personnel.
Batumi Laboratory will be able to expand research components and introduce new methods using the latest technologies to make the research work more successful. According to the ministry’s sources the number of monitoring stations will increase in the future in accordance with the framework directives of the European Union’s water and marine strategy.
Similarly Scientific research opportunities in the direction of fishing and aquaculture will increase significantly both in the marine space and in internal water bodies with the implementation of the latest and upgraded technology.
Notbay till now only a short chemical analysis was carried out in the Batumi laboratory and samples were sent to the Tbilisi air, water, and soil laboratory for the complete results of the report. The minister expressed happiness on the opening of this new opportunity and added that in future more such regional office will be opened to facilitate the needs of the people.
