In Belgium, several supermarket chains are limiting the sales of products such as flour, oil, and canned vegetables due to excessive demand. At many markets, the flour and sunflower oil shelves are bare.

As a result of the Ukraine-Russia war, most Belgian supermarkets have imposed restrictions on the sale of numerous products such as oil and flour, toilet paper, and tinned food.

Moreover, on Friday, Colruyt, the country’s largest grocery chain, limited the sale of flour and oil, allowing per customer a maximum of two litres of oil and two kilograms of flour.

“Consumption in the last several days has not been usual,” a Colruyt spokesperson said. “This is a precautionary measure,”. To allow for replenishment of the shelves and to provide an opportunity to all consumers to make a purchase.”

Lidl markets made a similar move on the same day, limiting purchases of wheat and oil, as well as canned vegetables and toilet paper, to two litres of oil, two cans of vegetables, and three packs of toilet paper per customer.

Recently, the country’s two major grocery chains, Aldi and Carrefour, imposed restrictions on the sale of a variety of products, including flour and oil.

In a statement, Aldi stated that they began to restrict the sales of oil, flour, wheat, and flour mixtures to 3 units. Carrefour also restricted oil and flour sales.

Despite the restrictions, flour and sunflower oil cannot be found in most Belgian markets.

Concerns regarding the supply issues arose as a result of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, particularly for products like oil and bread.

The two nations were among the world’s biggest wheat and oil producers.

Furthermore, these countries are no longer supplying these products due to the war.

Similar limitations were in place in Belgium at the start of the COVID-19 epidemic in April 2020.

As Belgium tightened its borders, markets restricted the sale of products such as pasta, flour, and toilet paper.
