Georgia: Authorities fined polluting vehicles in four cities

The officials of the Department of Environmental Supervision of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture fined a large number of vehicles for causing pollution.

The officials of the Department of Environmental Supervision of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture fined a large number of vehicles for causing pollution. The anti-pollution drive started on September 4, 2023 in four major cities of Georgia: Tbilisi, Rustavi, Kutaisi, and Batumi.

It is to be added that since the law came into force on April 4, 2024 4,568 natural and legal persons have been fined by the Department’s moving crews for non-conformity with the established norm of motor vehicle emission.

The 2107 fines were imposed on drivers/owners of moving vehicles in Tbilisi, while 977 violations were fined by department employees in Kutaisi, 812 in Batumi, and 672 in Rustavi.On the other hand of the 4568 offenders fined by the Department of Environmental Supervision employees includes 3955 ndividuals, and 613 are legal entities.

It is also worth noting that 2767 penalty bills have been issued against light car drivers, including 1575 minibuses, 225 trucks, and 1 bus driver. For non-conformity with the legal norm for motor vehicle emission a heavy fine is charged.

Moreover in the case of a natural person the fine is 100 GEL for the first time 300 GEL for the second time, and 600 GEL for the third time. In contrast in the case of a legal entity the fine amount is 500, 1500 and 3000 GEL respectively. However If the fine is paid within 10 days then the amount of fine will be reduced by 20% for the offender.

Citizens can check fines on the Department of Environmental Supervision’s website www.videos.police. They can also pay fines on the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ official website www.des.gov.ge.

The department has advised the people to keep the vehicle well maintained. Moreover it was also told by the department that in the coming days more such drive will be launched to fine the violators of pollution norms. They also warned that the amount of penality will be enhanched in future as well.
