Tbilisi: Court sentences two people in drugs case

The Tbilisi city court has sentenced two people for money laundering and drug smuggling. They were sentenced to imprisonment after the evidence was produced by the Office of Prosecution Service of Georgia.

The Tbilisi city court has sentenced two people for money laundering and drug smuggling. They were sentenced to imprisonment after the evidence was produced by the Office of Prosecution Service of Georgia.

It is to be specifically mentioned that based on the evidence presented by the prosecutor’s office the court found the person accused of international transportation of a particularly large amount of narcotics in transit guilty.

The Tbilisi City Court while pronouncing the punishment also shared the evidence presented by the prosecutor’s office and found the person accused of illegal acquisition and storage of a large amount of narcotics , illegal importation into Georgia and international transportation through transit guilty. There was also a large amount of money recovered from them that could have been generated by them from illegal drug smuggling as well.

It is also to be noted that the evidence in this regard was examined during the trial further proving that a citizen of the Islamic Republic of Iran illegally imported a particularly large amount of 77,175 kg of banned drugs into Georgia in 2023 by using illegal methods and by hiding them in the doors of a truck trailer.

Moreover a substance containing the narcotic drug “heroin” which he was transporting towards Bulgaria also recoverd. At the same time the accused kept the pills containing the narcotic drug – “buprenorphine” personally.

After his arrest he was charged with the first part of Article 260 and subsection “a” of the sixth part the first part of Article 262 and the fourth subsection “a” of the Criminal Code of Georgia (illegal purchase and storage of narcotic drugs illegal import into Georgia and international transit shipping) was submitted.

According to the decision of the Tbilisi City Court the defendant was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Also the truck used to commit the crime was confiscated for the benefit of the state.
