Cybercrime: One held for stalking in Georgia

The prosecution office of Georgia charged one for forcing a person to suicide and stalking. The law enforcement agencies are further investigating the matter to brought the accused to justice.

The prosecution office of Georgia charged one for forcing a person to suicide and stalking. The law enforcement agencies are further investigating the matter to brought the accused to justice.

It is to be specifically mentioned that the investigation in this regard was conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs which found that the accused systematically posted the audiovisual information of the victim on social media. These posts hurt the honor and dignity of the victim on social networking sites.

The accused continued to stalk the victim from January 2022 to October 2023  due to personal disagreements, which caused mental suffering to the victim and created a significant change in the way of life of the victim. After continue Stalking and the breach of privacy the victim on October 17, 2023, tried to commit suicide by using a sharp object on the left upper limb. However, due to timely medical assistance the victim’s life was saved.

After completing the initial investigation the law enforcement officers arrested the accused on April 24, 2024. He has been charged with the first part of Article 115 of the Criminal Law Code of Georgia (leading to a suicide attempt by systematically humiliating the honor and dignity of the victim).

At the same time the first part of Article 151¹ (stalking – systematic unwanted communication by electronic means, which causes a person mental suffering and which creates a real need for a person to change his lifestyle) has been imposed against the accused.

The Georgian code has the provision for two to four years of punishment if the accused is found guilty for abovementioned charges. The representative of the prosecutor’s office has already applied to the court to send him into custody as a preventive measure against the accused.

The law enforcers also warned social media users to use maximum retrain while using social networking sites. Moreover social media users must refrain from sharing personal information with strangers online.
