The Ministry of Culture and Sports of Georgia congratulates Robert Sturua on his birthday, honors his outstanding contribution to Georgian culture, and wishes him health and longevity.
Robert Sturua, one of the greatest directors of modernity, has been dedicated to developing Georgian culture and theater. Rustaveli Theater and Robert Sturua gained international recognition for Georgian theater art by performing on the stages of the world’s famous theaters.
Robert Sturua has been performing at Rustaveli National Theater since the 1960s of the 20th century. The work of one of the greatest directors includes more than 100 performances, which always stand out with distinctive handwriting.
The director’s first big success was a. Miller’s “Salem Trial” (1965). Then “Samanishvili’s stepmother” (with Temur Chkheidze), “Khanuma,” “Ruvkve,” “Caucasian Chalk Circle,” and “Richard III” gained no less success. One of Robert Sturua’s calling cards, Bertolt Brecht’s “The Caucasian Chalk Circle,” is among the best plays of the 20th century. Shakespeare’s International Society has named Hamlet among the ten best plays of the last 50 years at London’s Riverside Studio.
Robert Sturua performed in famous theaters in different countries and cities: Saarbrucken, Düsseldorf, Athens, Moscow, Buenos Aires, Tel-Aviv, London, Istanbul, Helsinki, Samara, Weimar, Rome, Kyiv, Ankara, and Jerusalem.
The Georgian director has received several awards and international awards. He is the People’s Artist of Georgia and winner of Shota Rustaveli, State of Georgia, Kote Marjanishvili, and Mikheil Tumanishvili Awards; Stanislavsky International Award, “Golden Mask” (Russia); and Buenos-Aires Theater Historians and Critics Association Award (Argentina).
In 2014, the International Theater Institute awarded Robert Sturua the title of World Theater Ambassador for his invaluable contribution to the World Theater. He has also received the Albert Schweitzer Prize, the English Criticism Prize, the Argentine State University Prize, the Baltic House Festival Major Prize, and so on.
With the support of the Georgian Ministry of Culture and Sports, director Giorgi Chumburidze filmed the documentary “Robiko’s Masterclass” to celebrate Robert Sturua’s 85th anniversary. The film premiered in the great hall of Rustaveli National Theater.
