Roseau, Dominica: The Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, on Thursday, launched Cassandra Williams as DLP’s representative from La Plaine constituency, for the snap general elections on December 6, 2022.
In his address, PM Skerrit pointed out the opposition for creating fear among the Dominican citizens regarding the snap general elections, stating- “Snap elections have been efficiently conducted all over the world, and the will of the people was determined and honoured. How is it, therefore, that nothing abnormal is happening in Dominica, yet the voters of Dominica are being made to live in fear?”
PM Skerrit further added that Snap elections were conducted in Barbados as well, where the opposition, despite being unprepared, contested in the elections. Similarly, St Kitts and Nevis conducted snap elections, where the opposition fought and acquired a position in office.
The obstacles that the UWP has been creating in the successful conduct of the snap General Elections were also targeted by PM Skerrit in his address at Williams’ launch ceremony, stating,
“No one in this country told the United Workers Party not to contest the elections!! They heard elections were called; they knew they were not ready… and they panicked. They jumped ahead of themselves and declared that they were not taking part. They refused to nominate candidates and now, as the date for voting draweth nigh, they are feeling stupid. They are feeling defeated”.
PM Skerrit also slammed UWP for playing a victim of their own deeds, adding, “Why are they blaming others for their own act of suicide? They told themselves they could not win, and they boycotted.”
Further, he appealed to the citizens of Dominica to utilize their democratic right to vote on December 6 and elect the most suitable representatives for their constituency without any fear.
PM Skerrit expressed his vision of the returning officers announcing the results on Tuesday night that would voice out the strength of Dominican citizens and the democratic foundation that Dominica possesses.
