Tbilisi: Electricity production and the energy sector is pivotal in the development of Georgia’s economy. The development of the other sectors of the economy is ultimately dependent on the development of the energy sector, stated Levan Davitashvili, the Georgian Economy Minister, on an event dedicated to the celebration of Energy Workers Day.
The Economy Minister felicitated the energy workers on their professional day and expressed his gratitude for their valuable contribution towards the upliftment of the Georgian economy while traditionally awarding the meritorious and veteran workers with an appreciation certificate.
“The country is going through a crucial point of time and era of the country’s development and transformation, the new history of Georgia began like this in the 19th century, when the father of the nation, Ilia Chavchavadze, connected the country’s development with the introduction of technologies, and among them, the first power plant was built in Tbilisi under his initiative. Today, the country steps towards a new era of digital transformation, innovation and technology, and in this regard, of course, the development of competitive electricity production in the country and of the sector as a whole remains vital for the country”, Davitashvili said.
Davitashvili also highlighted various outstanding projects, implemented by the Georgian Government, including the modern Gardabani thermal power plant. Alongside other sustainable and renewable energy projects and added that with the professionalism of the energy workers, the Government is looking forward to the implementation of far more important projects.
The Deputy Economy Minister, Romeo Mikautadze, also presented the current and planned event and projects in the field and introduced the development strategy of the country’s energy sector as a whole.Â
The country has been reliant on hydropower as it generated 82% of the total energy production in the country. And the country is looking to launch more of sustainable energy plants to mitigate the global climate crisis, said Mikautadze as he reviewed Georgia’s current energy sector scenario.
