Georgia and Switzerland discuss cooperation in regional development

The Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Mzia Giorgobiani, met with the new Regional Director of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Barbara Bioni, on Tuesday.

Georgia: The Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Mzia Giorgobiani, met with the new Regional Director of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Barbara Bioni, on Tuesday.

The meeting focused on the outcomes of the long-term cooperation between the Ministry and the SDC, which aims to support the decentralization and democratization of local governance in Georgia.

The parties highlighted the importance of the SDC’s projects in enhancing the capacities and accountability of local authorities, as well as promoting civic engagement and participatory decision-making.

The meeting also addressed the joint activities for the economic empowerment of local self-governing units in the country and the plans to continue and expand the cooperation. 

The SDC has been supporting various initiatives in rural development, agriculture, tourism, energy efficiency and environmental protection in Georgia.

At the end of the meeting, Giorgobiani expressed her gratitude to the SDC for its valuable contribution to the regional development of Georgia and wished Bioni success in her new role.

Mzia Giorgobiani

Mzia Giorgobiani is the Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia. Mzia Giorgobiani has many years of experience working in managerial positions in the public sector.

During her experience in the Ministry of Finance, she went through different career stages, from the position of the Advisor of the Humanitarian and Technical Assistance Department to the Deputy Head of the State and Foreign Funding Department, where she coordinated the development of cooperation strategy with international partners, as well as the implementation of obligations under Association Agreement Between Georgia and EU.

She worked at international finance institutions and in investment projects funded by the partners of the Georgian public sector and participated in annual and intermediate budget planning. At the early stage of her career, she worked as an accountant at “Sakteleponmsheni” (JSC). 

Mzia has experience working with international financial institutions. She was a participant in the Voice Secondment Program at the World Bank. Her competencies included analysis of the Bank’s experience with global projects and awareness concerning the World Bank’s activities, products, and procedures. 

Mzia graduated from the Faculty of Microeconomics and Mamanegent of Iv. Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. She is fluent in English and Russian languages.
