Parliamentary Committees approve PM candidate’s government program

Georgia: Four parliamentary committees supported the vote of confidence and the government program presented by the prime minister candidate of Georgia, Rati Bregadze, at a joint meeting on Tuesday.

Bregadze, who the ruling Georgian Dream party nominated after the resignation of former PM Irakli Garibashvili, outlined his vision and priorities for the next four years under the government program titled “For the construction of a European state”.

He presented a report on the issues within the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Justice, which he currently heads, and answered questions from MPs from various factions.

He also highlighted the implementation of the 

  • “Strategy for the Development of State Services 2022-2025” and the introduction of new standards in state services providing agencies,
  • expansion of the geographic area of justice houses, construction of new small penitentiary institutions in Rustavi city,
  • improvement of the living conditions of accused/convicts,
  • repair works and improvement of sports infrastructure and facilities in existing penitentiary institutions,
  • improvement of the qualification of employees of prison institutions and working conditions,
  • opening of additional justice houses in prison institutions, equipping correctional institutions and treatment institutions with the latest medical equipment,
  • increasing the scale of the project “Digital University“, implementation of sport management strategy,
  • expanding the scale of the project “Re-market” and the number of “PROBBOX”,
  • Implement orientation courses for probationers and crime prevention courses in schools, and increase access to restorative justice programs and referral centre services.

The Committees on Legal Issues, Protection of Human Rights and Civil Integration, Defense and Safety, Procedural Issues and Rules listened to Bregadze at a joint meeting. They expressed their support for his government program.

The vote of confidence for Bregadze and his cabinet will be held in the plenary session of the Parliament on Wednesday. He needs the support of at least 76 MPs out of 150 to become the new Prime Minister of Georgia. The Georgian Dream party holds 90 seats in the Parliament.
