Kareli municipality joins EU-UNDP network for economic growth

Georgia: Kareli municipality has joined the EU-UNDP network “Mayors for Economic Growth” (M4EG). This joint initiative aims to promote sustainable and inclusive local economic development in the Eastern Partnership countries.

The M4EG network provides new knowledge, networking, sharing experiences, making professional connections, learning about and piloting innovative practices and receiving funding opportunities to the municipalities participating in it.

As a member of the M4EG network, Kareli municipality will benefit from the Urban Learning Center. This platform offers educational programs to employees of member municipalities on issues such as intelligent and inclusive cities, new ways of economic development, green and fair transformation, access to financing opportunities and involvement of stakeholders in the development process.

The M4EG initiative was launched by the European Union in 2017 to support local self-government in the Eastern Partnership countries. The initiative is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) since 2021. The M4EG network works closely with local governments and other partners to help them actively contribute to local economic growth and create opportunities for the positive transformation of the municipality.

Kareli Municipality

Kareli is a town in Shida Kartli, Georgia, located on the right bank of the Mtkvari, 94 km west of the country’s capital, Tbilisi. The district is bordered by the Gori municipality on the east, on the west by the Khashuri municipality, on the southwest by Borjomi, on the north by Java, and the northwest by the Sachkhere municipality. 

The district has a vocational school, one central library, a cultural centre and a local history Museum. Kareli municipality is distinguished by nature and the abundance of cultural monuments. 

The plains of Shida Kartli occupy the central part of the district, and the northern slopes of the Trialeti Range occupy the southern part. In the plain and hilly foothills of the Kareli municipality, there is a moderately humid climate, with mild cold winters and long, warm summers.
