Tbilisi is all set to celebrate New Year

Tbilisi, Georgia: As the new year approaches, the city of Tbilisi is preparing for a series of festive celebrations that reflect its rich cultural diversity and heritage.

Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, is a melting pot of different religions and ethnicities, which gives it a unique charm and character. The city celebrates Christmas not Georgia once but three times, according to the Catholic, Armenian, and Orthodox traditions.

The first Christmas was on December 24-25, when the Catholic community in Tbilisi commemorated the birth of Jesus Christ with prayers and gatherings in the churches. The city also joins the rest of the world in welcoming the new year with fireworks and music on December 31, 2023, with Rustaveli Avenue becoming a lively centre of entertainment and fun.

The new year brings a day of rejuvenation and resolutions on January 1, followed by a day of fate on January 2, 2024, called Bedoba. This is a traditional Georgian day, where the way people spend their time is believed to influence their luck and fortune for the rest of the year.

The second Christmas is on January 6-7, when the Armenian community in Tbilisi celebrates the birth and baptism of Jesus Christ with special ceremonies and rituals. The Armenian Christmas is a solemn and sacred occasion marked by fasting and prayers.

The third and final Christmas is on January 6-7, when the Orthodox community in Tbilisi observes the birth of Jesus Christ according to the Julian calendar. The Orthodox Christmas is a time of spiritual reflection and grand feasts, with unique dishes and delicacies prepared for the occasion.

The festive cycle ends with the Old New Year on January 13-14, another unique tradition that follows the Julian calendar. This is another day of fate, where people hope for a prosperous and happy year ahead.

Tbilisi is a city that embraces its diversity and celebrates its culture with joy and enthusiasm. The town invites visitors and locals alike to join the festivities and experience the magic of the winter wonderland.
