Georgia: The Georgian Melioration has successfully completed the crucial task of supplying water to Kumisi Lake, a vital step in preventing its potential drought.

It is noteworthy that Kumisi Lake is in danger of drying up due to the reduction of stagnant waters, which seriously threatens biodiversity and the ecosystem.

“Lake Kumisi, in the municipality of Gardabani, is located 470 meters above sea level and is one of the important overflow areas for hummingbirds and migratory birds, which use this ecosystem as food and resting place during migration.” Lake Kumisi is a unique place in this way. Within the framework of the work carried out by the Georgian Improvement, the most important measure for the protection of biodiversity is filling Kumisi Lake with water. “In all cases where there is an opportunity to replenish drought-prone lakes and save them, we will take appropriate measures,” Otar Shamugia said.

The works carried out in the village of Akhal Kumisi allowed natural downstream water to flow into the cleaned channels and be released completely towards Kumisi Lake. Within the framework of the works, the channel up to 2 kilometers was cut and washed in 2 directions; as a result, water from the swampy areas will be first in the collectors and then in the lake.

The works carried out in Kumisi Lake have provided an additional 2.5 million m3 of water, increasing the total water volume to 7 million m3.

The completed works have not only increased the water level in the lake but also significantly improved the ecological situation, a testament to the positive impact of the project on the lake’s ecosystem.
