Tianeti Municipality: Information meeting held on forest sector management

An important information meeting was recently held in the Tianeti Municipality of Georgia. The meeting was held to apprise the people of the various aspects of the forest sector management throughout the country.

An important information meeting was recently held in the Tianeti Municipality of Georgia. The meeting was held to apprise the people of the various aspects of the forest sector management throughout the country.

This meeting was organized by the Environmental Information and Education Center of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture in Tianeti Municipality. The issues that were discussed included the discussion on changes to the Georgian Forest Code, sustainable forest management, improvement of state control over forests, as well as the advantage of energy-efficient furnaces and alternative fuel usage for the reduction of carbon emmission.

It is to be added that the information meeting was opened by Ekaterine Bendeliani. He is the  Deputy Director of the Center for Environmental Information and Education. The deputy director was accompanied by the  First Deputy State Commissioner Gocha Kavtaradze in Mtskheta-Mtianeti.

Notably the meeting was held within the framework of  Project “ECO.   This main objective is to reduce pressure on forests and reduce deforestation in Georgia through sustainable forest management and conservation. Meanwhile, the project aims to promote the development of the market for energy-efficient and alternative fuels and to strengthen the capabilities of communities and local self-governments near the forest to play an active role. Moreover, this project will further increase their involvement in ongoing processes in the sector and increase their income sources For the diversification of the areas.

The project includes eight municipalities of three regions of Georgia. These included the   Guria, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, and Kakheti region.  The eight municipality of these three regions are implementing various projects to preserve the natural flora and fauna of the country as well.

At the same time the Government of Georgia, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) are also extending their cooperation for this project as well.

The Ministery representative expressed hopes that the project will bring dramatic change for the envrioenment protection in the country.
