Justice Ministry of Georgia and Portugal sign Memorandum of Cooperation

Tbilisi: A Memorandum of cooperation was signed between the Ministries of justice of Georgia and Portugal. The Memorandum was signed by Rati Bregadze and Katarina Sarmento e Castro during the official visit of the Georgian delegation to Portugal.

 A decision to deepen field cooperation and drafting a memorandum was made in July 2022 at the meeting of the ministers of justice of Georgia and Portugal, during which the parties discussed the implementation of concrete initiatives for the development of bilateral relations.

The Memorandum covers various spheres of cooperation between Georgia and Portugal, including the adoption of Georgian legislation to EU law, digitization of justice, crime prevention, rehabilitation-resocialization of prisoners in penitentiary and probation systems and access to educational programs. 

To this end, the memorandum provides for the development of training and qualification programs for justice ministries of the two countries, as well as organizing joint seminars, study visits and legal forums.

Memorandum was led by the meeting between the ministers of justice of Georgia and Portugal. Rati Bregadze and Katarina Sarmento e Castro discussed concrete opportunities and future initiatives to be undertaken within the framework of this

 cooperation. The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Justice of Georgia Beka Dzamashvili, Georgian Ambassador to Portugal Giorgi Mirtskulava and Deputy Head of Mission Tsotne Zurabiani.

In Portugal, Georgian delegation will further hold meetings with the Secretary of State and the Head of the Penitentiary Service on digitalization and administrative modernization. A delegation’s visit to the Penitentiary and the Center of Justice is planned.
