The concerned agencies of the Republic of Georgia and Ireland have signed an important agreement. As per the agreement now exchange of the Georgian driving licence has become possible in Ireland.
As per the information shared by the concerned ministries the ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, Ministry of Transport of Ireland and the Road Safety Authority of Ireland have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the exchange of driving licences of Georgian citizens in Ireland.
This Memorandum of Understanding is already in effect from 25th of June 2024 meaning the holders of a valid driving licence issued by Georgia or Ireland can exchange equivalent driving licence in the state of their normal residence without undertaking theoretical or practical exams.
Before the introduction of this provision, the holders of the driving license have to undergo different practical and theoretical qualification tests to obtain a valid driving license in another country.
The specific provision of the memorandum defines the categories/subcategories of vehicles and different types of driving licenses that can be exchanged in Ireland under the agreement. There are some terms and conditions which are mandatory to fulfill before the exchange. The category of licence covered under the project includes AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, C1, C, D1, D1E, D, DE, CE and C1E categories/subcategories and will be possible without passing theoretical or practical exams.
At the same time as per the information available on the official website of the Road Safety Authority of Ireland, Georgia has already been added to the list of recognized states for the purposes of exchanging driving licences by Ireland.
It should be further noted that according to the information posted on the website the citizens of states recognized by Ireland, including Georgia who have normal residence in Ireland (at least 185 days in each year) can exchange their driving licences via online application or in person at an National Driving License Service (NDLS).
