The World Competition Day, with various activities, is celebrated in more than 30 countries, including Georgia, on December 5, 2023. Georgia’s National Competition Agency has been joining for the third year.
The Enforcement of the policy of competition and consumer rights protection in Georgia is getting stronger, which is confirmed by the increased activity and the results of the decisions made by the agency. Since 2014, the most critical reforms in the field of competition policy have been implemented.
In particular, due to the amendments made in the Georgian Law on Competition, Georgia has legislation that aligns with the requirements of DCFTA and is close to EU standards. Starting in 2021, the agency will be charged with enforcing the “law on the introduction of anti-dumping measures in commerce” and the law on consumer rights from November 2022.
The functions of the National Competition Agency are expanding, and this process is entirely in line with our country’s integration with Europe. With the latest legislative changes – from 2024, our agency will continue to function under a new name – “Competition and Consumer Protection Agency of Georgia”.
Since 2014, to improve the competitive environment, the agency has issued 94 recommendations, including 61 to state bodies/local self-government bodies.
Forty-seven case studies and 12 market monitors were completed with concrete results, and 31 agreements were made on the concentration of economic agents.
The agency actively cooperates with local and international colleague agencies. Twenty-four international memorandums were signed in 2014-2023.
The agency is an active ICN International Competition Network member and, from 2023 – a partner of the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN). We actively cooperate with UNCTAD, OECD, and USAID representatives.
On November 16-18 of this year, the National Competition Agency of Georgia, SEMEC, National Bank, Communications Commission and State Insurance Supervision Service held the II International Conference “Competition and Consumer Rights” in Georgia.
The event was attended by more than 300 delegates and delegations from about 20 countries. The international conference received significant support and evaluations, both locally and internationally.
