Georgia: Organized by the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture and supported by the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), an official meeting was held to include certain remarks and opinions in the document of the Fourth National Environmental Action Plan (NEAP) of Georgia for 2022-2026.

This document is an integral part of Georgia’s obligations under the Association Agreement with the European Union and is aimed at improving the state of the environment and environmental governance in the country.

The meeting was opened by the First Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture, Giorgi Khanishvili, and the Deputy Minister, Nino Tandilashvili, who thanked the UNDP and the World Bank for their support, as well as the Ministry’s specialists and independent experts for their active involvement in the process.

“Work on the document was carried out as transparently as possible. In the process of developing such strategic documents and, in general, making environmental decisions, the active involvement of the public is especially important. That is why the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture, in accordance with the law, reviewed the document as transparently as possible and with the participation of all stakeholders. Together with the representatives of the sectoral departments of the Ministry and the experts involved in the process, we discussed in detail the remarks and comments submitted during the public discussion of the document. Some remarks and comments were taken into account and reflected in the final document,” said Nino Tandilashvili.

The Ministry of Environment and Agriculture launched work on an environmental document – the Fourth National Environmental Action Program – last year.

The document defines the priority directions in terms of environmental protection for 2022-2026; Structural units of the Ministry, subordinate agencies, as well as the Ministries of Economy and Sustainable Development and Regional Development and Infrastructure and their subordinate agencies, as well as independent experts and specialists, were involved in the preparation process.

The initial working version of the document was developed, and thematic public discussions were held. In 2022, a total of 9 public hearings were held.

All interested persons, including representatives of non-governmental organizations and citizens’ groups, had the opportunity to participate in the discussions of the document of state importance and submit their opinions/remarks, some of which were reflected in the final document, which will be submitted to the Government of Georgia for approval.
