The Republic of Georgia has been on the leading front in the direction of the circular economy. Georgia surpassed the other EU’s candidate countries with its consistent efforts. The candidate countries aspire to join Eueropan Union after fulfilment conditions of the European Union.
Georgia’s Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Solomon Pavliashvili and Deputy Minister of Finance of Georgia Mikheil Dundua, attended the presentation of the project of the national roadmap for the transition to the circular economy of Georgia.
The national guide of Georgia is a strategic plan that defines the long-term vision of the transition to a circular economy and the main initiatives needed to achieve it. These initiatives also involve reducing the total rate of municipal solid waste and waste generation, increasing the overall rate of waste recycling and restoring lands affected by illegal dumping.
Other parameters include increasing energy efficiency, improving land and water resource management and materials yield and creating new green jobs. According to the Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture, in the last five years the Government of Georgia has taken a number of important steps toward a circular economy.
He stated that Georgia has developed many rules and regulations similar to EU legislation. According to the assessment of international experts, Georgia is a leading country among the candidate countries of the European Union with steps taken in the direction of the circular economy.
The Deputy Minister of Finance of Georgia while speaking on the achievement focused on the rate of economic growth in the country and the establishment of a high-standard economy. He pointed out that it is essential for the government of Georgia to make financial progress while maintaining high environmental standards.
In the current high economic growth process, significant attention should be focused on environmental protection, ecology, circular economy and correct use of resources. The work on the Circular Economy Guide has been ongoing since September 2023. The Georgian minister expressed hopes that the country will continue its efforts in the future as well.
