Tbilisi: In a shocking statement, Germany’s Ambassador to Georgia Peter Fischer expressed fears that Georgia may miss opportunity to join European Union. His comments came into light during an interview with media.
Besides Georgia’ integration into European Union, he also discussed many other issues such German-Georgian relations, economic growth of economy and bilateral relation of Georgia and Germany.
While speaking specifically he added that Georgia journey to European Union has entered into Impasse nowadays. He said, it was a great gesture on part of European Union when it has granted candidate status to Georgia. However even after receiving such recognition Georgia failed to bring necessary changes in its polices which have created suspense over its journey into European Union.
Ambassador made special mention of foreign agent law and anti-LGBTQ law adopted by Georgia despite opposition from many opposition parties as well as NGO’s and CSOs’.
He also said that this is very shocking that Georgia accused Germany and European Union as foreign agents under newly adopted controversial law namely foreign agents’ law.
The foreign agent’s law was adopted by Georgia to bring transparency in funding of NGOs’, CSO’s and another organisation. As per the controversial foreign agent law any organisations receiving more that 20 percent of their funding from foreign country have to register themselves as agents of foreign country.
German Ambassador also raised objection on October 26 national election of Georgian Parliament. He said the large-scale violation of Georgian election code was never expected from country which have received status of EU’s candidate country.
He said that the action of Georgian government may affect economic progress. There are many companies who have already disinvested from the Georgia.
The company Heidelberg Cement have already left market of Georgia. Moreover, Georgia inaction to adopt European Union policies have already caused huge damage to Georgia and if necessary action is not taken more such things can happen in future as well.
According to him, Georgia government policies have been damaging potential growth of country. The migration of youth from Georgia is another alarming situation being created by inaction of Georgian government.
