The prominent non-governmental organization of the Republic of Georgia “Media advocacy coalition” celebrate world press freedom day. The day is celebrated every year on 3 May.
World Press Freedom Day this year has been dedicated to the relevance of journalism to protect the civil rights of people. Moreover, the importance of freedom of expression will also be underlined within the framework of the Press Freedom Day of 2024. The present age of technology drive era is posing many challenges to the press and media houses. The spread of misinformation is another challenge that is creating challenges for the journalism community in general and individual journalists specifically.
The day was declared as the International Press Freedom Day in the year 1993 with a resolution passed in the United Nations General Assembly. The day is considered a reminder for governments across the world to take the necessary measures to protect the dignity of journalists and freedom of expression. It is also to be noted that this year another international conference will held in Chile from 2 to 4 May at the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Centre, Santiago, Chile.
The celebration by the advocacy group also gains significance as large-scale protests are being held in the capital city to oppose the foreign influence law. There are some news appearing in the newspaper that the police have launched an attack on the journalist which is the biggest violation of the right to freedom of expression.
The proposed law of “foreign influence agent” is also seen as a threat to the freedom of the non-commercial as well as civil organization of the country. Under the proposed law the media houses or civil organizations receiving more than 20% of their funding from any foreign country have to register themselves as an institute of foreign influence.
The media organizations and civil organizations are calling it a direct attack on the freedom of speech and expression. The media advocacy coalition also shared this information on the Facebook page with the image of Radio Freedom by Mzia Saganelidze.
