The Ministry of Culture of Georgia expresses its deep sorrow over the death of the famous musician, composer and teacher, Vaja Azarashvili of country. He died a day ago on 7th February 2024.

Vaja Azarashvili was born in Tbilisi on July 13, 1936. He is a renowned composer, pianist, and teacher who graduated from the Tbilisi State Conservatoire.For his contribution to Georgian art, Vazha Azarashvili received the State Prize of Georgia. He has received many awards and is an Honorary Citizen of Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia.

It is to be specifically mentioned that the Vazha Azarashvili was born into a family of folk music lovers. Moreover he received Musical Education from IV Music School and the State Conservatory named after Vano Sarajishvili .

In 1964 he graduated from the Conservatory Graduate School under the leadership of Iona Tuskia and Andria Balanchivadze.
Vazha Azarashvili in addition to his creative work was also a pedagogical activist. Since 1961 he had been a teacher of II and III musical schools like musical-theoretical disciplines and since 1974 he has worked as a teacher at the Tbilisi State Conservatory named after Vano Sarajishvili and since 1988 he has worked as a professor of the Conservatory.

Notably from 1998 to 2007 he was the chairman of the Union of Composers of Georgia. Vazha Azarashvili’s work has diverse genre Creation in the field of professional music at different times.

His some work includes Symphony (1966), two violin concertos, a concert for cello (1969), a concert for alto and chamber orchestra (1973), two operettas that were set on the stage of Tbilisi Musical Comedy Theater (1969, 1972), concertino quartet (1963), vocal-symphonic poem (1961), two pieces for string orchestra (1964), sonata for violin and forte For piano (1961) and others.

Vazha Azarashvili’s works are often completed abroad too. His works like “miniatures” and “nocturnal” for chamber orchestra and many other compositions are particularly popular. Vazha Azarashvili’s symphonic, chamber-instrumental or stage music was loved by the listeners from the beginning.

The composer created the anthem of the football team, “Dinamo, ” which earned him the people’s love and admiration. It is still associated with victory, national pride, and joy.

Moreover his songs including ” I Lost a Little Girl”,” The Song Is All My Property”,” The sun is my friend”, and others have an irreplaceable place in the repertoire of Georgian performers of different generations.

Georgian Ministry of Culture and Sports extend its condolences to the family of Vazha Azarashvili on his death.
