The Ministry of environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia has developed a new action plan for 2024-25. The action plan included planned actions in the country for the next 2 years regarding climate change for seven sectors of the country’s economy.
The minister termed this action plan as one of the well-planned that has the potential to bring change to the environmental protection of the country. As per the action plan the main areas that will be focused on under the new action plan includes the following:
1. Generation and transmission of energy
2. Transportation
3. Buildings
4. The business of the day
5. Agriculture
6. Waste management
7. Forestry
In the waste sector the necessary steps will be taken to set up new dumps , upgrade existing dumps, and construct urban wastewater treatment dumps.
Similarly, many steps will be taken to reduce carbon emissions in the transport sector. These include encouraging non-motorized means (modernisation of metro stations, promoting the development of passenger transport, arrangement of bicycles) and promoting public transport (particularly in Tbilisi). Also, a technical mechanism for controlling the emission level from cars will be implemented.
As per the action plan in the agricultural sector, emphasis will be placed on improving sustainable windswept management and raising awareness on the popularisation of climate-wise agricultural practices.
To strengthen the forest sector’s carbon absorption capabilities, reforestation and reforestation measures are planned in degraded forests, with special attention to improving sustainable forest management.
The action plan is not just about addressing climate change, but also about making our citizens aware of the importance of environmental protection. The policies and programs under this plan are designed to make Georgia a leading nation in climate safety, ensuring a brighter and more sustainable future for all.
