Tbilisi: The Georgian Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament and the Chairman of the Committee on Democracy, Human Rights and Humanitarian Issues in the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Nikoloz Samkharadze, recently visited the line of occupation in the village of Odzi with the delegates from the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.

Chairman Samkharadze discussed the situation of human rights and the current general situation in occupied regions with the delegatory representatives on their visit to these regions.

Nikoloz Samkharadze noted, We visited the occupation line in the village of Odze, where the members of the delegation of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly got acquainted with the situation in the occupied territories both in terms of human rights and in general. The delegates heard about the plans that the Russian Federation has regarding the annexation of these regions and learned about the difficult situation in which ethnic Georgians are in the occupied territories.”

The difficulties for the citizens in the occupied regions include the restriction of movement, as well as the prohibition of retreating back to the homes of the population who had lost their homes both in the Tskhinvali region and in Abkhazia. All this will be reflected in the committee’s report, and the issue will be discussed at the yearly session conducted by the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.

At the same time, Fara Karimi, deputy chairman of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Committee, stated that “I think it is very important to see the situation on the ground with our own eyes. We have received information about the current situation, as well as about the restrictions on the right of movement imposed on the population.”

The Parliament of Georgia hosted the meetings with the delegation of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. The representatives of the Committee for Democracy, Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs also met Tea Akhvlediani, the Georgian Minister of State for Reconciliation and Civil Equality, during their visit.
