Tbilisi: On January 9, the Ombudsman of Georgia presented an alternative (North) report to CEDAW, the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women -Georgian Government about eliminating all kinds of discrimination against women by the Georgian government on the eve of the implementation of the oriso convention.
The alternative report refers to the 6th periodic report submitted by Georgia to the Committee and reviews the measures taken by the government for the implementation of the convention.
The alternative report of the Ombudsman discusses flaws in national legislation, including inconsistency of definition of sex crimes with the Istanbul Convention, absence of a definition of violence and crimes that are committed in the disguise of “merit”, economy improper regulation of mic violence and more.
The alternative report assessed different diverse groups of women, in particular, women having disabilities, ethnic minorities, women residing in regions and rural areas, victims of armed conflict and forced labour, and the rights and needs of displaced women.
The Ombudsman provided information to CEDAW about the situation regarding violence against women. In particular, the alternative report assesses the state’s reactionary and preventive measures taken against violence against women and support services/mechanisms available for women victims.
Additionally, the alternative report reviews the effectiveness of institutional mechanisms for gender equality in Georgia, a component on sexual and reproductive health and rights for minors in the formal education system, Education in women’s health and healthcare issues such as maternal health and family planning services, and more.
The UN Committee on Elimination of Discrimination Against Women(CEDAW) will take into consideration the report presented by Georgia at the 84th session, which will be held from February 6 to February 24 this year. After the end of the session, the Committee will receive a conclusive opinion evaluating the situation of implementation of the convention in Georgia and making the recommendations of the Committee.
