Georgia: Parliament signs MoU with UNICEF

The Georgian parliament has signed a memorandum of understanding with international agency called UNICEF (United Nations Children Emergency Fund).

The Georgian parliament has signed a memorandum of understanding with international agency called UNICEF (United Nations Children Emergency Fund). This is the second memorandum of understanding that has been signed between the Parliament of Georgia and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

UNICEF is an international organisation working for the welfare of children in conflict zones. From both sides the memorandum was signed by the chairman of the Permanent Parliamentary Council for the Protection of Children’s Rights Baia Kvitsian and Jesper Moller the representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund in Georgia.

 

Baya Kvitsian specifically stated that ” Moving the cooperation into an official format will contribute to the harmonization of the legislation of Georgia with the international standards of children’s rights and strengthening the effective implementation of the legislation on the rights of the child”.

Importantly “The memorandum signed today will be valid during the 10th convocation of the Parliament of Georgia that is up to including October 2024 “.

As per the information provided by the official of the both the sides the main purpose of the memorandum is to promote and strengthen of children’s participation in the decision-making and supervision of the implementation of the “Child’s Rights Code” and other normative acts related to children’s rights.

On the other hand the memorandum also aims to strengthen institutional cooperation between the Parliament of Georgia and the United Nations Children’s Fund for the improvement of child rights legislation. 

On the other hand Jesper Moller the representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund in Georgia stated” I am glad that we have been allowed to officially renew our cooperation with the Parliament and to ensure the implementation of the “Code of Children’s Rights” and relevant norms in Georgia through joint efforts “.

 Notably the first memorandum of understanding between the Parliament of Georgia and the United Nations Children’s Fund was signed in December 2021 within the framework of the functioning of the Permanent Parliamentary Council for the Protection of Children’s Rights.

The Georgian officials said that they are thankful for the assistance being provided by UNICEF and other international agencies for the successful implementation of the children’s welfare policies in the Republic of Georgia.
