Georgia: The primary phase of the road, embankment, and repair projects on the left bank of Mtkvari in the Didube district, next to the eatery “Gagri,” is finished. Tbilisi’s mayor, Kakha Kaladze, met with deputy mayor Irakli Bendeliani to discuss the finished project.
It is worth noting that for safety purposes, ladders and concrete blocks were temporarily inserted in the trench, to ensure stability, the damaged roadway was restored, and the asphalt pavement was laid.
The mayor noted that the road collapsed here a few months ago. When they saw that the section had a problem, they stopped the traffic and started the work to prevent it. Now it is possible to move by car without restrictions. “A wall of smoke has already been installed in the area. Due to the water level, the work will be fully completed at the end of July, at the beginning of August,” Kakha Kaladze added.
In addition, it should be noted that the road on the left bank of Mtkvari was damaged in April. At the same time, preventive and restorative works have been started urgently.
Field specialists were actively involved in the process, and studied the causes of the incident. The study found that the road collapse was caused by groundwater and surface water. An additional effect was the hydrodynamic effect of the mtkvari on the construction of the shoreline and the seasonal variation of groundwater level.
All the remaining works will be possible to be completed after the water level in Mtkwari rises – expected by the end of July. Currently, the movement on the pavement has been restored and is completely safe for motor transport.
The project, which cost 5 million GEL, was implemented by the Infrastructure Development Civil Service of Tbilisi City Hall.
Along with the mayor of the capital, Giorgi Abutidze, Head of the Civil Service for Infrastructure Development, Zurab Ugulava, Acting Chairman of Didube District, and Majority Deputy Givi Chkhartishvili were present.
