The National Agency for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Georgia of the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Georgia has completed the restoration and rehabilitation works of the exterior of the Church. This church is named after the Virgin of Timotesubani in the Borojomi municipality.
Georgian Minister of Culture and Sports Tea Tsulukiani along with Deputy Minister, Director of the National Agency for Protection of Cultural Heritage Nikoloz Aznaurashvili, Head of the Restoration and Art Council of Georgia Metropolitan David-Abba Alaverdeli, Metropolitan Daniel of Chiaturi and Sachkheri Eparchy, Chief Architect-Restaurateur Ta Riel Kiparoidze and field specialists visited the site of church as well.
The roof of the church was changed almost two years ago, but the water was still receding. Therefore, high-quality copper material was chosen to protect the statue which ensures the cathedral and its wall paintings safely for a long time. So the waterlogging problem is solved and the statue is protected from environmental effects. The main task of the agency on the one hand was to preserve historical buildings with copper sheets, and on the other hand to protect the statues from water infiltration.
Damaged glass work on the neck of the dome was restored, a layer of cement from different periods was removed on the facade.
Before the start of implementation of the rehabilitation project of the Historical-Architectural Cultural Heritage Restoration-Conservation Section of the Cultural Heritage Agency and the Scientific Council of the Georgian Patriarchate, Art and Restoration Center a detailed study was conducted.
The central dome church of Timotesubani dated to the XII-XIII centuries is located in Borjomi municipality in the vicinity of the village of Timotesubani. The cathedral is one of the important cultural heritage monuments both architectural and wall painting.
The implementation of the project to protect the Statue of Cultural Heritage of National Importance Timotesubani, started in the fall of 2022 and will be completed at the end of 2023.
